Shoreline Preservation
Mission of the Shoreline Advisory Committee
The Shoreline Advisory Committee was initially formed as an advisory to the Acme Township Board on matters relating to the acquisition, scenic restoration, and public usability of the irreplaceable shoreline in Acme Township for current and future generations. To date, the committee has been focused primarily on land acquisition.
Bayside Park Expansion Project Summary
This is a multi-phased and multi-year effort that includes the acquisition of land from willing sellers, the deconstruction of aging and blighted structures, the development of new park amenities such as parking lots, landscaping, picnic areas, and the creation of a permanent endowment for the Bayside Park. The park, located along US-31 and the Grand Traverse Bay, will be owned and managed by Acme Township. The Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) has negotiated the land’s protection with willing landowners and raised funds necessary to complete the project elements. Working with willing landowners, more than 6 acres of land with 1,300 feet of shoreline were purchased at fair market value during the first two phases of this long-term effort to protect and open up a mile of shoreline in Acme Township. Building on this momentum, Acme Township and GTRLC worked very hard together in 2013, and recently completed Phase 3 of Acme's Bayside Park project in December, 2013. Simultaneously with completion of Phase 3, Acme Township's Parks & Recreation Committee has worked hard to develop a detailed park plan that will make optimal public use of the newly-acquired shoreline parkland. The Board approved the plan in December, 2013, and is now working collaboratively with the GTRLC to determine the best, most cost-effective way to implement the plan in a phased-in manner over the next few years.
Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy is still accepting donations for this project to support ongoing maintenance and future rebuilding of park features.

The community is creating a plan for the US 31 corridor from our southern boundary (at Woodland Creek Furniture) to the intersection of US 31 N with Dock/ Brackett Rds. The core focus area is between M-72 and Five Mile Road. Our goal is to redesign the shoreline district in ways that are friendly to foot and bicycle traffic, linking the businesses, residences and parks within the district and encouraging the redevelopment and re-occupancy of blighted properties with a mix of stores, offices and residences.
