The Acme Township Board of Trustees has formed eight citizen advisory committees in an effort to engage and involve the public in various issues facing the township. One of these advisories is the New Urbanism Advisory Committee. On October 13, 2005 the Board of Trustees adopted Resolution #R-2005-20, which in part provided direction to this group. The New Urbanism Advisory has also adopted the following:
Mission Statement:
To recommend to the Township Board a New Urbanist Planner for Acme Township that has knowledge and experience in New Urbanist design and employs the vision within the Master Plan to prepare an overall master design for an Acme Township Urban Center.
The advisory has recommended to the Board of Trustees that they work with RTKL, a Chicago-based internationally-renowned planning firm to engage specific landowners and the general public in visioning and design of a New Urbanist Town Center. The Board authorized the advisory to distribute an
RFP, which yielded responses from many of the top international planning firms with proven track records in mixed use New Urban Design (plans that have resulted in constructred and economically successful projects). The leading candidates invited to interview were:
RTKL
DPZ (Duany Plater-Zyberk)
UDA (Urban Design Associates)
The Board of Trustees has indicated willingness to commit up to $50,000 towards the estimated $250,000 cost of the project. In August 2006 the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians made a generous award of $25,000 from their 2% fund grant program. Additional grant-based funding is being sought as well.
